Last Words: Boring Problems are Sometimes the Most Interesting

چکیده

Abstract In a recent position paper, Turing Award Winners Yoshua Bengio, Geoffrey Hinton, and Yann LeCun make the case that symbolic methods are not needed in AI that, while there still many issues to be resolved, will solved using purely neural methods. this piece I issue challenge: Demonstrate approach problem of text normalization is possible. Various groups have tried, but so far nobody has eliminated unrecoverable errors, errors where, due insufficient training data or faulty generalization, system substitutes some other reading for correct one. Solutions been proposed involve marriage traditional finite-state with models, thus shown can alone. Though hardly an “exciting” problem, argue until one solve “boring” problems like methods, cannot claim success.

Where Are the Interesting Problems?

Constraint programming has become an important technology for solving hard combinatorial problems in a diverse range of application domains. It has its roots in artificial intelligence, mathematical programming, operations research, and programming languages. In this talk we will discuss a number of challenging application domains for constraint programming, and the technical challenges that th...

Easy Problems are Sometimes Hard

We present a detailed experimental investigation of the easy-hard-easy phase transition for randomly generated instances of satisfiability problems. Problems in the hard part of the phase transition have been extensively used for benchmarking satisfiability algorithms. This study demonstrates that problem classes and regions of the phase transition previously thought to be easy can sometimes be...

We Are Boring

Despite all of these applications revolving around data, the database community appears to be content to cede these domains to our AI colleagues. This is absurdly short-sighted, and just as with the world-wide web, and (nearly) big data, we risk being an also-ran in the most significant trend in computer science in the coming decade. These smart systems will change the way we commute, work, and...

Mining N-most Interesting Itemsets

Previous methods on mining association rules require users to input a minimum support threshold. However, there can be too many or too few resulting rules if the threshold is set inappropriately. It is diicult for end-users to nd the suitable threshold. In this paper, we propose a diierent setting in which the user does not provide a support threshold, but instead indicates the amount of result...

Last Words Reviewing the Reviewers

I just returned from the Association for Computational Linguistics’ 43rd Annual Meeting (ACL-2005). The acceptance rate was 18%. Is this a good thing or a bad thing? When the acceptance rate is low, precision tends to be high. The audience can judge precision for itself. If the presentations are good, everyone knows it. And if they aren’t, they know that as well. ACL-2005 had great precision. R...
